Your Furnace Troubleshooting Guide

Cooler weather is finally here, and it’s the time you rely on your furnace the most. As long as it’s working properly, you and your family will feel cozy and comfortable all winter long.

However, if your furnace is giving you trouble, like blowing cold air or not blowing at all, you’re in for some chilly days and even colder nights.

Fortunately, our HVAC experts have compiled our furnace troubleshooting guide for you.

Be Sure Your Thermostat is Correctly Programmed

It’s an easy mistake to accidentally switch off your thermostat or to program it improperly.

So if you suspect your furnace may be malfunctioning, you should start by first checking your thermostat. Be sure it is set to “heat” mode and that the temperature is where you want it.

If you’ve checked that it is programmed correctly, try setting it a few degrees warmer to see if that helps.

If you have a broken thermostat or are simply looking to upgrade, we offer a variety of smart, programmable thermostats. Our team can work with you to help you find the best new thermostat for you and your home.

Replace Your Thermostat Batteries

Another common culprit of a malfunctioning heating system is dead batteries.

If the batteries are dead, your thermostat cannot communicate with your furnace, meaning your furnace won’t kick on when it’s cold.

If you have a battery-powered thermostat, switch the old batteries out with fresh ones, and see if that helps.

Put In a New Furnace Filter

Dirty air filters not only contribute to poor air quality, but they can also shut off your heating system entirely.

New furnaces can actually shut themselves off to avoid overheating, which can and will happen if they’re filtering dirty air.

Try replacing your furnace filter to see if that improves its performance.

Double Check Your Circuit Breakers

Perhaps you’ve simply just blown a fuse. To solve this problem, locate your fuse box and make sure all of the switches are turned on.

You’ll know you’ve blown a fuse if one of the switches has flipped the other way. If that happened, just flip it back.

If the fuse was the issue, you’ll be back to a warm and comfortable home very soon.

Check the Fuel Source

Potentially, your valve may have been turned off by accident.

Take a look but be sure to be very careful, as hazardous gas or propane is involved. If you smell gas, contact an HVAC professional in Virginia immediately, as leaks can be dangerous.

When It’s Time To Call a Technician

If you’ve gone through the steps above and still have no heat, it may be time to get in touch with a local HVAC technician. If you have any of these problems, give our team a call:

  • Incorrectly Installed Furnace
